Mama Chin's Bulgogi (불고기)

What is it?

Korean dish of thinly sliced marinated beef grilled on a barbecue or stove-top griddle.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb thinly sliced ribeye or sirloin beef (can find in H Mart)

  • 1 carrot, thinly sliced

  • 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced

  • 4-8oz of shiitake or oyster mushrooms (can also use white mushrooms)

  • 1/2 bunch of green onion, chopped

  • Canola or vegetable oil

  • Sesame seeds (garnish)

Marinade Ingredients:

  • Sliced garlic

  • 6 Tbsp soy sauce

  • 3 Tbsp brown sugar

  • 2 Tbsp mirin (rice wine)

  • 1/2 cup crushed Nashi pear

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • 1 tsp minced ginger

  • Pinch black pepper

  • OR use 5 tbsp of pre-made Bulgogi sauce (much easier and tastes the same / I like the Chung Jung One brand)

Steps:

  1. Create the marinade and mix in with mirin and sliced beef. If using the pre-made Bulgogi sauce, mix in with 2 tbsp of mirin and sliced beef. Make sure the sauce is well mixed with the beef and use your hands to massage everything together.

  2. Leave in fridge overnight or a few hours to marinade.

  3. Cook onions, then mushrooms and then carrots separately in pan with oil. After cooked, set aside on a plate.

  4. Cook marinated beef in pan with oil on high heat until beef is tender and brown on both sides.

  5. Once beef is cooked, add cooked onions, mushrooms and carrots into pan altogether and mix. Add chopped green onion in the last few minutes of cooking.

  6. Add sesame seeds as garnish at the end, and serve with rice
